Vanessa Lachey, best known for hosting MTV’s “Total Request Live” and “Entertainment Tonight” and for winning Miss Teen USA in 1998, will compete in season 25 of “Dancing with the Stars” this fall. She is paired with season 18 champ Maksim Chmerkovskiy, but she faces stiff competition from several of this year’s other stars including her very own husband, 98 Degrees member Nick Lachey. Nick and Vanessa become only the second married couple to appear on the show at the same time, following season 21 contestants Carlos and Alexa PenaVega.
The new season starts on September 18, so before she and her competitors hit the dance floor let’s consider the pros and cons.
One of the pros for Vanessa is the fact that she’s competing against her husband. “DWTS” loves to promote rivalries, whether it’s between married couples like the PenaVegas or ice skating partners like Meryl Davis and Charlie White in season 18. This added attention could help Vanessa avoid getting lost in the shuffle early on.
To win “Dancing With the Stars” it takes more than just great dancing. For many stars, having a great attitude and relatable personality can take you a lot farther — just ask David Ross, who finished second in season 24 despite getting just average scores from the judges. I think with her hosting background it should be fairly easy for Vanessa to connect with the audience as well as with her partner Maks.
As I mentioned above, “DWTS” loves to promote rivalries. And they also love to generate their fair share of drama. In season 18 they announced ice dancers Meryl and Charlie as in jeopardy before revealing Charlie’s elimination. They did the same thing in season 21 by placing both of the PenaVegas in jeopardy the week Alexa was eliminated. Interestingly enough, both Carlos and Meryl made it to the finals after their partners’ eliminations, with Meryl even taking home the Mirror Ball. We all know this will happen to Vanessa and Nick if one of them is eliminated earlier on, but will Vanessa follow in the successful footsteps of Carlos and Meryl or the disappointment of Alexa and Charlie?
Her professional partner Maks hasn’t had the best track record of engaging with his partners. When Maks is fully engaged and present he does extremely well (i.e. Meryl Davis, Laila Ali, Mel B and Kirstie Alley). However, when Maks seems checked out that’s when he and his partner tend to leave the competition early (Amber Rose, Denise Richards, Heather Morris). Hopefully, Vanessa is able to light that fire in Maks this season.
