“Well this last year has been fun, really fun,” says Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) in a new trailer for the upcoming sixth season of HBO’s “Veep” (watch above). “The loss hurt, but I did take this opportunity to reacquaint myself with an old friend of mine by the name of Selina Meyer.” The inept politico went from vice president to president to not-president-at-all; last season she lost her election bid, but it looks like we can expect a kinder and gentler Selina now that she’s a private citizen.
Okay, not so much. Next we see her intimidate Congressman Jonah Ryan (Timothy Simons) into cowering in a chair as she threatens, in grand Meyer style, “I will destroy you in ways that are so creative they will honor me for it at the Kennedy Center.”
Last year “Veep” won the Emmy for Best Comedy Series for the second year in a row, and Louis-Dreyfus won Best Comedy Actress for an unprecedented fifth year in a row. Counting her victory for “The New Adventures of Old Christine” in 2006, she has won the category a total of six times, exceeding the record previously held by Mary Tyler Moore (“The Dick Van Dyke Show,” “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”) and Candice Bergen (“Murphy Brown”).
Could she pull off an astonishing six-peat this year? And how will Selina’s loss of political power affect the show as a whole? Says Kevin Dunn as Ben Cafferty, it’s “just like the good old days — except shittier in every conceivable way.” The new season hits the fan on Sunday, April 16.
