On May 26 Netflix will stream its latest original feature film “War Machine,” starring Brad Pitt and Ben Kingsley. The streaming service debuted a full-length trailer today (watch above) that showcases the military film’s absurdist nature. “We can’t help them and kill them at the same time, it just ain’t humanly possible” says a deep-voiced Pitt in army fatigues. Much like Netflix’s 2015 film “Beasts of No Nation,” Gold Derby has learned that “War Machine” will be eligible at next year’s Oscars.
Pitt plays General Glen McMahon, “the man who kicked Al Quaeda in the sack.” Netflix describes the darkly comedic film as one specifically for our times, as Pitt’s character gets caught up in a modern war machine that keeps on churning, seemingly to no end. It’s based on the book “The Operators: The Wild and Terrifying Inside Story of Stanley McChrystal’s War in Afghanistan” by late journalist Michael Hastings.
Director/screenwriter David Michod is best known for the crime film “Animal Kingdom,” which earned an Oscar nomination for Jacki Weaver as Best Supporting Actress in 2010. “War Machine” is Michod’s third feature film following “The Rover” (2014). Besides Pitt and Kingsley, the star-studded cast also includes Emory Cohen, Topher Grace, Anthony Michael Hall, Will Poulter, Lakeith Stanfield, Meg Tilly and Tilda Swinton.
