“When you’re married to a man who got rich putting people’s feet in cement, you probably never had to do a dish,” says Kate Winslet to her daughter-in-law Juno Temple in the new trailer for Woody Allen‘s latest film, “Wonder Wheel” (watch above). Winslet stars as a waitress in Coney Island in the 1950s. She’s married to a carousel operator (Jim Belushi), whose daughter is on the run from the mob. Justin Timberlake co-stars as a lifeguard whose life intersects with theirs.
At age 81, Allen continues to direct a new film every year — though in 2016 he managed to direct both a feature film (“Cafe Society”) and a streaming miniseries (“Crisis in Six Scenes”). He has won four Oscars: Best Director for “Annie Hall” (1997), and Best Original Screenplay for “Annie Hall,” “Hannah and Her Sisters” (1986), and “Midnight in Paris” (2011). But his last film to contend for awards was “Blue Jasmine” (2013), which earned him another bid for writing — his 24th career bid — and won Cate Blanchett an Oscar for Best Actress.
“Wonder Wheel” is the first collaboration between Allen and Winslet, who herself is a seven-time Oscar nominee, with a Best Actress victory for “The Reader” (2008). Timberlake is also an Oscar nominee (Best Original Song for “Can’t Stop the Feeling” from 2016’s “Trolls”), though he’s still looking for his first bid for acting. The film premieres on October 14 as the closing night selection at the New York Film Festival, and it opens in theaters on December 1.
