‘Wonderstruck’ trailer: Julianne Moore reunites with Todd Haynes for Oscar redemption [WATCH]

On July 20, Amazon Studios released a new trailer for its upcoming film “Wonderstruck” (watch above). The mysterious new trailer teases the interconnected stories of Ben, a young boy in the Midwest, and Rose, a young girl from New York 50 years earlier. They’re separated by decades, but the film chronicles their journeys in parallel. The film is written by Brian Selznick based on his 2011 novel, and it’s directed by Todd Haynes, who is looking for Oscar redemption after being snubbed for “Carol” (2015).

“Carol” did reasonably well all things considered, earning six nominations including Best Actress (Cate Blanchett) and Best Supporting Actress (Rooney Mara). But it was widely expected to earn nominations for Best Picture and Best Director. It missed the cut in those categories, and in fact it has the unfortunate distinction as the most nominated film not to be nominated for Best Picture since the Oscars expanded its top category beyond five nominees in 2009. For two years (2009-2010) there were 10 nominees for Best Picture, and since 2011 there has been a sliding scale between five and 10 nominees.

“Wonderstruck” reunites Haynes with actress Julianne Moore, who previously appeared in his “I’m Not There” (2007) and most famously in the Douglas Sirk-inspired melodrama “Far from Heaven” (2002), which earned adoring reviews from critics but failed to win Moore the Best Actress Oscar and didn’t earn Haynes a directing nomination, though he did contend for his screenplay. Moore was eventually redeemed by winning Best Actress for “Still Alice” (2014), so perhaps she can help Haynes get into the Oscar winners’ circle.

The new film already earned raves when it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May. It didn’t win the Palme d’Or, but that won’t necessarily count against it in the Oscar race. And Amazon Studios proved successful at the Oscars last year with “Manchester by the Sea,” which was nominated for Best Picture and won awards for Best Actor (Casey Affleck) and Best Original Screenplay (Kenneth Lonergan).
