The 33rd annual edition of the Independent Spirit Awards begin at 2 p.m. PT/5 p.m. ET on Saturday, March 3. These prizes will be handed during a two-hour ceremony that airs live nationwide on the IFC channel. Returning to host these low-key proceedings that take place on a tent on Santa Monica beach are Nick Kroll and John Mulaney, long-time comedy collaborators who were as emcees last year.
We are predicting the winners of all the Indie Spirit Awards races. Our official odds are based on a combination of five sets of predictions: Expert journalists from top media outlets, our Editors who cover awards year-round for Gold Derby, the Top 24 Users who got the highest scores predicting last year’s Spirit Awards, the All-Star Top 24 who got the highest scores when you combine the last two years predictions, and thousand of readers like you, who make up the largest and savviest bloc of predictors.
While “Call Me by Your Name” has a leading six nominations, this romance trails the horror satire “Get Out” in the race for Best Picture according to our exclusive odds. But its a close race and the character study “Lady Bird” is in the mix as well. The two Oscar frontrunners, “The Shape of Water” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” — were inexplicably snubbed in this top race.
However, we are predicting that “Three Billboards” will win the same acting awards that it is tipped to take at the Oscars for leading lady Frances McDormand and supporting player Sam Rockwell. With Gary Oldman (“Darkest Hour”) not in the running here, look for Timothee Chalamet (“Call Me by Your Name”) to win Best Actor. Laurie Metcalf (“Lady Bird”) should win this popular vote over her Oscar rival Allison Janney (“I, Tonya”). And we expect Jordan Peele to win for both writing and directing “Get Out.”
Chalamet is guaranteed to get onstage at least once as he has been tapped as a presenter as have two other nominees: Robert Pattinson (“Good Time”) and Margot Robbie (“I, Tonya“). These three lead a roster that also includes: Fred Armisen, Chadwick Boseman, Carrie Brownstein, John Cho, Jason Clarke, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jon Hamm, Ethan Hawke, Salma Hayek, Ben Mendelsohn, Janelle Monae, Kumail Nanjiani, Elizabeth Olsen, Amanda Seyfried, Michael Stuhlbarg and Lena Waithe.
