2018 Tony Awards: ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ will win six Tonys, ‘The Band’s Visit’ to take five

“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” will win dominate the Tony Awards on Sunday (June 10), winning six awards, including the coveted prize of Best Play. However, it will the revival of the epic “Angels in America” that dominates the acting races, with wins for leading man Andrew Garfield and featured performers Denise Gough and Nathan Lane. On the musical side of the aisle, “The Band’s Visit” will win a leading five Tony Awards, including Best Musical and for leading lady Katrina Lenk. Only two other new musicals, “Mean Girls” and “SpongeBob SquarePants,” will take home Tonys. The former will bag Best Book while the latter is set to claim the lighting and sound design awards.

Revivals of two classic musicals will claim the lion’s share of awards. A new production of the 1957 Best Musical champ “My Fair Lady” will win four Tonys, including Best Musical Revival and for the scene-stealing turn of Norbert Leo Butz. And a remounting of Rodgers and Hammerstein‘s “Carousel” will nab three.
