In 2016, the Visual Effect Society snubbed the eventual Oscar champ “Ex Machina.” Will the same fate await this year’s Academy Awards winner for Best Visual Effects when the VES reveals its roster of contenders for its 16th annual awards on Jan. 16?

“Alien: Covenant”
“Blade Runner 2049″
“Dunkirk”
“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2”
“Kong: Skull Island”

Among these 10 films still in contention at the Oscars are two of the top box office draws of the year: “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” and “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.” Also in the mix are more serious fare such as “Dunkirk,” “The Shape of Water” and “Okja” as well as sequels such as “Blade Runner 2049” and “War for the Planets of the Apes.”

The 10 films that didn’t make the cut with the academy were:

“Beauty and the Beast”
“Ghost in the Shell”
“Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle”
“Justice League”
“Life”
“Logan”
“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales”
“Spider-Man Homecoming”
“Thor: Ragnarok”
“Wonder Woman”

Will any of these films snubbed by the visual effects branch make a comeback with the VES?
