The nominees for the 53rd Annual Academy of Country Music Awards were announced on Thursday, March 1, honoring the year’s best in country music. Chris Stapleton is the top nominee with eight bids including his first ever for Entertainer of the Year, where he’s joined by Jason Aldean, Garth Brooks, Luke Bryan and Keith Urban. Aldean is the two-time defending champ in the top category, though he has only one other nomination this year: Male Vocalist of the Year, which he has won twice before (2013-2014). Bryan is also a two-time past Entertainer champ (2013, 2015). Brooks has won a remarkable six times (1991-1994, 1998-1999), though he hasn’t been back in the winner’s circle in almost two decades. Urban, like Stapleton, has yet to win the top contest and is hoping this will be his lucky year.
In addition to Entertainer of the Year, Stapleton is up for Male Vocalist, Album of the Year (“From A Room: Volume 1” as both artist and producer), Single Record of the Year (“Broken Halos” as both artist and producer) and Song of the Year (“Whiskey and You” as both artist and writer). But even though Stapeton has become a darling of the country music industry he was upset for Male Vocalist last year by Thomas Rhett, who contends six times this year.
So will Stapleton sweep? Will there be more upsets this year?
