Back in the 12th season of “American Idol,” teenage singer Adam Sanders made it all the way to the Top 50 before getting cut. Because of his weight and sexuality, Adam received lots of hateful messages on social media. “I let it get to me in the wrong way. It killed me inside,” he revealed after returning to “American Idol” on Sunday night’s episode. However, when the San Antonio, TX resident arrived for his audition, Adam made the bold decision to perform as his drag queen persona Ada Vox. Watch Ada’s audition video above.
Ada wowed judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie with a performance of “House of the Rising Sun” by The Animals. She earned three “yes” votes, sending her through to the next round, but only after promising Katy that she was gong to take this competition seriously. “I’m not here to play with anybody. I’m here to chase my dreams and make them come true,” she responded to Katy.
After receiving death threats on social media five years ago, Ada confessed in her pre-interview that she was “contemplating lots of things that I shouldn’t have. I just kind of disappeared from the world for a while and in doing that I kinda hurt myself even more. That’s really when I was at my worst, thinking maybe I shouldn’t be here. Maybe I’m not worth the fixing. Maybe I’m not worth another try.”
However, Ada didn’t give up. “Through all of the negativity I have managed to build myself up as a new person, a stronger person,” she readily admitted. “I’ve recreated myself in ways that I could not have imagined. I am so ready to show everybody — to show all of America, to show these judges — who I am now. I can take anything and everything that comes my way.”
When Ada introduced herself to the “Idol” judges, she explained, “I was on it in Season 12 as a little ol’ boy named Adam. So this is new. Gotta represent for the Texas queens! I work by day serving fish on a platter at a lovely little seafood restaurant. And then I’m a part time woman by night. I do this when the sun goes down.”
