“American Idol” judge Katy Perry created a bit of a controversy on Monday’s audition episode when she temporarily pitted sisters Payton Taylor (20) and Taryn Coccia (17) against each other. In the end, both sisters advanced to the next round in Hollywood. However, a whopping 66% of fans who voted in our recent poll said that only country artist Payton should have advanced. Conversely, 8% thought that only pop singer Taryn should have gotten a golden ticket. The other 26% agreed with the judges that both sisters were amazing. Where do YOU side with these poll results? Taryn auditioned with Jessie J‘s “Masterpiece” while her sister Payton accompanied her on guitar. Payton and Taryn regularly sing together at airports, but Payton was not planning on auditioning for “American Idol.” Before the judges could give their critiques on Taryn’s performance, Katy asked Payton if she also wanted to sing. While hesitant at first, Payton later broke into a rendition of John Prine‘s “Angel from Montgomery.”
Payton earned rave reviews and immediately received a golden ticket, but when it came time for Taryn to be judged, things got awkward. Katy told Taryn “no” and that her voice wasn’t quite ready yet. As Taryn looked on nervously, the two male judges — Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan — disagreed with Katy and gave Taryn two “yes” votes. Thus, both sisters left the audition with golden tickets.
How will Payton and Taryn fare against the competition once they get to Hollywood? We’ll find out soon, as auditions for “American Idol” Season 16 end next week on ABC. The live shows will begin Sunday, April 22 while the grand finale is scheduled for Monday, May 21. See the complete list of “American Idol” winners over the past 15 years.
