“Big Little Lies” won’t be back on HBO until next year, but the ladies of Monterey will be back in town this week: Production on Season 2, with the inimitable Meryl Streep, begins Friday, Reese Witherspoon revealed on “Late Night with Seth Meyers.”
“Y’all, we’re starting next Friday on ‘Big Little Lies 2.’ I can’t believe it,” Witherspoon said on last Friday’s show. “Not only do we have every cast member coming back, but also Meryl Streep is joining us.”
Streep, whose casting was announced in January, was a big coup for Witherspoon and fellow producer and star Nicole Kidman, who co-starred with Streep in “The Hours” (2002) but shared no scenes with her. The “A Wrinkle in Time” star said she was in disbelief when Streep agreed to play Mary Louise Wright, who comes to town in the wake of the death of her son Perry (Alexander Skarsgard).
“Well, she sent an email to Nicole and I, and it said, ‘OK, I read the part and I love it and I’m going to do it.’ And I, like, dropped the phone,” Witherspoon recalled. “And then I called Nicole and was like, ‘Is this real life? Like is this really happening?'”
After she “hugged myself gently for a minute,” Witherspoon got her priorities in order. “And then I call the writer [David E. Kelley] and go, ‘You better write me good scenes with Meryl Streep!'” she joked.
Like the eight-time Emmy-winning first season, “Big Little Lies” Season 2 will consist of seven episodes. The entire Season 1 cast and Kelley are returning, but Andrea Arnold (“Transparent”) will replace director Jean-Marc Vallee, who opted not to come back.
