Sunday night during the Prince-themed Top 7 performance episode of “American Idol,” 18-year-old Caleb Lee Hutchinson sang “When Doves Cry” for judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. This Dallas, Georgia resident also took on “Amazed” by Lonestar as his birth year song during Sunday’s two-hour episode. America was so impressed with Caleb’s two performances that they sent him through to the Top 5 after voting live coast-to-coast. Do YOU agree with America’s decision? Watch the “When Doves Cry” video above and then read the “American Idol” judges’ comments below.
Katy Perry: “Caleb, I just wanna say, gosh, it’s not where you come from, it’s what you grow into. I am so proud of you. This whole entire journey, you’ve proved so much already. It was a great rendition and thank God you brought that guitar back because I think that’s really your weapon. It’s a good weapon for you.”
Luke Bryan: “Yeah, Caleb, after that I can believe that you can do anything you set your mind and your heart to. Way to come out here and slay it at the end of the show. Good job, man.”
Lionel Richie: “A Caleb version/country version of ‘When Doves Cry.’ I’m very proud of you, my friend. Very proud of you.”
In his “American Idol” live blog, our recapper Denton Davidson noted, “Unlike Gabby, Caleb is sticking with his country roots and singing with his signature twang. This actually works but it seems a little bit slow and definitely lacks the magic of Prince’s version. That being said, this was one of the best Prince covers of the night. Well done.”
