Childish Gambino dethrones Drake on the Billboard Hot 100 as ‘This is America’ debuts at number-one

Childish Gambino (aka Donald Glover) has been the talk of the music industry ever since he debuted his new single and video for “This is America” on May 5, coinciding with his hosting and performing on “Saturday Night Live.” Now that buzz has translated to a number-one debut on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. He dethrones fellow hip-hop artist Drake, who had dominated the top of the chart for 15 weeks: 11 with “God’s Plan” and then another 4 with “Nice for What.” Both of Drake’s songs debuted at number-one, which makes “This is America” the third consecutive hit to launch at the top spot. See what else made the top-10 this week in the video above.

Thanks in part to its politically charged music video, which has been viewed more than 110 million times as of this writing, “This is America” was the most streamed song of the week and also had the biggest sales. This marks a significant milestone for Gambino, who had never had a top-10 hit before this, let alone a number-one hit. His previous high point on the chart was “Redbone,” which peaked at number-12 and eventually won him a Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Performance in addition to a nomination for Record of the Year.

Buzz from Gambino’s “This is America” and “SNL” appearance also led to a 419% rise in album sales for the artist, whose “Awaken, My Love” returned to the Billboard 200 chart at number-45, followed by “Because the Internet” at number-61 and “Camp” at number-197. None of those albums even features “This is America,” which is a testament to how much interest has been sparked in Gambino in general.
