Will Casey Moss finally be nominated for a Daytime Emmy for playing JJ Deveraux on “Days of Our Lives”? Despite playing the role for the last five years he has yet to be nominated for Best Younger Actor. He’s pre-nominated again this year, and the good news for him is that this time we not only predict he’ll be nominated, we think he’s going to win too. That would be the seventh victory in the category for “Days,” which would tie it as the most awarded soap in this race since it was established in 1985.
The current record-holders are the now-defunct “Guiding Light” and the still-running “General Hospital.” “GL” won Best Younger Actor for Rick Hearst (1991), Monti Sharp (1993), Kevin Mambo (1996-1997), Jordi Vilasuso (2003) and Tom Pelphrey (2006, 2008). But CBS cancelled the series in 2009 after 57 years on the air, so it won’t be able to add to its total. “GH’s” winners were Jonathan Jackson (1995, 1998-1999), Jacob Young (2002), Chad Brannon (2004) and Bryan Craig (2016-2017).
“Days” won its six Younger Actor Emmys for four different actors: Billy Warlock (1988), Darin Brooks (2009), Chandler Massey (2012-2014) and Freddie Smith (2015). Brooks is on “The Bold and the Beautiful” now, while Massey and Smith are still on “Days,” but they’ve all aged out of the Younger Actor category (the cutoff is 26), leaving the door open for a new “Days” champ.
There are three “Days” actors pre-nominated this year: Moss, first-time pre-nominee Lucas Adams and 2017 nominee James Lastovic. But Moss is the only one expected to be nominated, and as of this writing he’s the front-runner to win with leading odds of 11/5. Those odds are based on the combined forecasts of hundreds of users who have entered their picks in our predictions center thus far. Among those betting on him to win are 13 of the Top 24 Users who got the highest scores predicting last year’s Daytime Emmy nominations, as well as 17 of our All-Star Top 24 who got the highest scores when you combine the last two years’ nominations predictions.
Of course, if “GH” wins this category it will set a new record with eight victories, but while the ABC soap has two pre-nominees of its own in this race, Garren Stitt and Hudson West, neither of them is among our top-five predicted nominees.
Do you agree with our consensus that Moss will carry the torch for “Days” into the record books for Best Younger Actor?
