Daytime Emmys 2018: A tale of two Jasons as Steve Burton & Billy Miller (‘General Hospital’) could be nominated for the same role

In the world of daytime dramas, where characters and storylines can span decades, it’s common for multiple actors to play one role over time. But it would be remarkable for two actors to earn Daytime Emmy nominations for playing the same character in the same year — and while on the show at the same time. Such is the strange tale of two Jasons on “General Hospital,” whose portrayers Billy Miller and Steve Burton are both on the ballot this year as pre-nominees.

Burton made Jason Morgan famous when he assumed the role in 1991. He went on to play the rich-kid-turned-mob-enforcer for 21 years, earning four Emmy nominations along the way and winning Best Supporting Actor in 1998. He left “GH” in 2012 and then joined the cast of “The Young and the Restless” as Dylan McAvoy, a role that won him another Supporting Actor Emmy in 2017.

“GH” recast the role of Jason in 2014 with, of all people, a “Y&R” alum. Miller played Billy Abbott on the top-rated CBS soap from 2008 to 2014, winning three Emmys in the process: two for Best Supporting Actor (2010, 2013) and one for Best Actor (2014).

But then Burton left “Y&R” in 2017 and rejoined the cast of “GH,” but Miller was still on the show, so what’s a writing team to do? If you’re a soap opera it’s quite simple: you just reintroduce Burton as Jason Morgan and retcon Miller into Jason’s secret twin brother Andrew Cain — obviously. So they’re not technically playing the same role anymore, but Miller was playing Jason for much of 2017 before Burton’s return, so now they’ve both earned pre-nominations credited as Jason Morgan: Miller for Best Actor and Burton for Best Supporting Actor.

Will these unusual circumstances lead to Emmy nominations for both Jasons?
