While the cast of “Game of Thrones” has never taken home a trophy at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the show’s talented stunt team has run off with a record six trophies in a row (2011-2016). That’s why Gold Derby’s TV odds for the 2018 SAG Awards favor HBO’s fantasy epic to win its seventh consecutive stunt prize this year, with leading 3/10 odds. But the TV stunt race is far from a lock, especially with Netflix’s female wrestling comedy “GLOW” in the mix.
The seventh season of “Game of Thrones” continued showcasing impressive stunts this year — particularly during its many battle sequences both on land and in the water — however, “GLOW” is a wildcard in this race. It’s the only TV comedy to be nominated for stunts in the history of the SAG Awards. And with the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements becoming such important parts of the zeitgeist, might SAG voters appreciate the show’s emphasis on female empowerment? As of this writing, “GLOW” comes in second place with 9/2 odds to prevail.
The other three stunt teams nominated at the 2018 SAG Awards are: “Stranger Things” in third place with 40/1 odds, “The Walking Dead” in fourth place with 50/1 odds, and “Homeland” in fifth place with 100/1 odds. “The Walking Dead” stunt team has been bested by “Game of Thrones” six years in a row, while “Homeland” lost three different times. “Stranger Things” is nominated for the first time in the stunt race after being snubbed last year.
