Does “Get Out”’s editing have the edge over “I, Tonya”’s? Most of our pundits are picking Jordan Peele’s film to win Best Editing at Saturday’s Independent Spirit Awards, giving it a narrow 4/5-odd lead over “I, Tonya” (7/4 odds), according to our predictions.
“Get Out” is the pick of six Experts, three Editors and 10 Top 24 Users, while “I, Tonya” topped the lists of five Experts, two Editors and seven Top 24 Users. “Good Time” (10/1 odds) is the only other nominee predicted to win, with two Experts selecting it. “Call Me by Your Name” (12/1 odds) and “The Rider” (80/1 odds) round out the field.
“Get Out” is expected to have a big night, as we’re predicting it to take home three other awards from its five nominations including Best Picture, so momentum could definitely carry editor Gregory Plotkin to a win. But “Get Out” was snubbed in editing at the Oscars, while “I, Tonya” made the cut (no pun intended) and won the comedy ACE Eddie for Tatiana S. Riegel. The Tonya Harding biopic also has showier and literally more editing than the horror film thanks to its mockumentary and flashback style.
The Spirit Awards added the editing category four years ago and have awarded “Short Term 12,” “Whiplash,” “Spotlight” and “Moonlight.” Obviously there will never be a perfect overlap with the Oscars, but one of its champs went on to win the editing Oscar (“Whiplash”) and the last two were Best Picture Oscar winners.
