Kendrick Lamar vs. Drake: Who will win Top Rap Artist at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards?

Top Rap Artist at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards is a two-way race between Kendrick Lamar and Drake. That’s according to the combined predictions of hundreds of Gold Derby users who have made their predictions so far. Lamar and Drake are the only two rap artists who also contend for Top Artist of the Year at these kudos, so it stands to reason that they would be the top contenders in their genre category. But which of them has the advantage?

As of this writing it appears to be Lamar. He leads our predictions with 5/6 odds of winning Top Rap Artist. That includes support from two Editors who cover awards year-round for Gold Derby and 19 of our Top 24 Users who got the highest scores predicting last year’s Billboard Music Awards.

Lamar is tied with Bruno Mars and Ed Sheeran for the most total nominations this year (15), and he had a big year on the Billboard charts, including the number-one album of 2017 (“Damn”) and one of the top-five biggest songs of 2017 (“Humble”). Then in the early months of 2018 he achieved additional success with the chart-topping soundtrack for “Black Panther.” Lamar co-wrote all of the songs on that album and performed on many of them, including the top-10 hits “All the Stars” with SZA and “Pray for Me” with The Weeknd.

But Drake holds the record for the most nominations in this category (seven), and he’s tied with 50 Cent and Eminem for the most wins, having claimed this prize for the last two years in a row. He also had a big year on Billboard with a chart-topping 2017 album “More Life” and two number-one singles in 2018 thus far, “God’s Plan” and “Nice for What.” And on Billboard’s list of the top artists of 2017, Drake came out ahead, ranked third while Lamar was fourth.

So we mustn’t underestimate Drake in this race. He ranks second with 14/5 odds with support from four of our Top Users who think he’ll pull off an upset. Do you agree with them? Might we be underestimating the other three nominees in this category, Lil Uzi Vert, Post Malone and Migos?
