“Lady Bird”’s wings have been clipped since winning two trophies at the Golden Globes Awards, having come up empty at every stop since then. That stalled momentum has seen both “Get Out” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” overtake it for Best Original Screenplay in our Oscar odds, but it’s still in the lead for the screenplay prize at the Independent Spirit Awards.
Our latest predictions have Greta Gerwig with 9/10 odds to snag Best Screenplay for her “Lady Bird” script, ahead of “Get Out” (13/5 odds), “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” (5/1 odds), “Beatriz at Dinner” (66/1 odds) and “The Lovers” (100/1 odds).
Unlike at the Oscars, this is the only category where “Lady Bird,” “Get Out” and “Three Billboards” are going head-to-head. Gerwig and “Three Billboards”’ Martin McDonagh were not nominated for Best Director and “Three Billboards” was snubbed in Best Feature; “Get Out” is in first place in both races.
Since “Three Billboards” will likely pick up wins for Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell in the acting categories, Best Screenplay is one of the few places voters can reward “Lady Bird” and specifically the auteur behind it. The coming-of-age story is also still No. 1 in our Best Supporting Actress odds, with Laurie Metcalf leading Allison Janney with 2/3 odds to 9/5.
