‘RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars’ episode 5 recap: Andy Warhol is queens’ inspiration in ‘Pop Art Ball’ [UPDATING LIVE]

In Thursday’s fifth episode of “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars” Season 3, the remaining six queens had to design wearable soup cans inspired by famed artist Andy Warhol. Tituss Burgess (“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”) and Shay Mitchell (“Pretty Little Liars”) served as this week’s guest judges. Which contestant came out on top as the challenge champ? And were Gold Derby’s predictions correct that either Aja or Kennedy Davenport would be eliminated?

7:59 p.m. – Previously, on “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars”! In last week’s fourth episode Shangela and BenDeLaCreme tied as winners of the “Snatch Game” challenge. They both chose to eliminate Chi Chi DeVayne, thanks in part to Chi Chi appearing in the bottom so many times already this season. Which queen will follow Chi Chi out the door this week? Let’s find out!

8:01 p.m. – Shangela was so shady last week setting Trixie Mattel up with what she said before eliminating Chi Chi instead. I loved it, but I also love that ultimately she didn’t eliminate Trixie based on personal feelings and that they’re making up with each other at the start of tonight’s episode. Shangela is playing the game hard and strategically.

8:04 p.m.RuPaul Charles in an Andy Warhol wig is a CHOICE. For this week’s mini challenge, Ru is taking photos of each of the girls to convert them into a pop art moment inspired by Andy’s iconic work.

8:06 p.m. – Ru’s choice as the winner is Aja! But that’s only the start to the Warhol Ball. This week’s main challenge is creating two Warhol-inspired looks from scratch–the first one is an homage to the Campbell Soup can series that is a soup-ermodel persona and the second one is a Studio 54 “disco queen couture” look.

8:14 p.m. – This is the first time in a long time that the queens have had to create their runway looks from scratch–in the early seasons this was pretty much the norm, but at some point in the later seasons the contestants got to bring the themed looks with them, having made them in advance. I love that this is testing their ability to be creative on the fly! Shangela is having the most trouble the sewing machines, something she struggled with when she first came to the show on Season 2.

8:24 p.m. – With two runways to judge, we get to the catwalk early on tonight’s episode. Michelle Visage, Ross Mathews (of “Celebrity Big Brother” fame), Shay and Tituss are all on hand to score the Warhol Ball.

8:30 p.m. – Personally, I’m a huge fan of Trixie’s soup look and especially her commentary about the can. Of all the queens, she brought the most comedy and instead of focusing on how great tasting it is she decided to say it “may cause death” and listed off a bunch of side effects like all the pharmaceutical commercials do! As for the Studio 54 looks, they all kind of underwhelmed, but Aja’s was my favorite because it looked the most expensive. But I did kind of gag when Ross said BeBe Zahara Benet‘s looked like a “homosexual car wash.” LOL!

8:34 p.m. – With only 6 queens in the competition, all of them get critiques from the judges. Aja gets clocked for her soup can being boring and then the judges like her disco outfit but point out to her that it’s not really disco at all. To make matters worse, she starts using references from the 60s (instead of 70s) and mispronounced names. Shangela, on the other hand, is applauded by Ross for her on brand soup, but the runway look was universally considered a flop for the records hiding so much of her body and her face.

8:36 p.m. – Trixie gets high praise for the comedy of her soup can and then again for her Barbie glam disco look. After being in the bottom last week, this is music to Trixie’s ears. Kennedy underwhelmed with her soup, but the disco look slayed the judges, specifically with her hair and makeup.

8:38 p.m. – BeBe was another that got praise for both looks–Michelle had nothing bad to say and Shay called it a 10 out of 10. After being in the top for the first four challenges, Ben gets her first lukewarm critique of the season for a boring disco look.

8:40 p.m. – Trixie and BeBe are easily declared the winners! They’ll lip sync for their legacy where the winner will decide between Aja and Shangela, the challenge losers, as to which queen is eliminated next.

8:45 p.m. – During deliberations with the bottom queens, BeBe is torn between her sisterhood with Shangela and the fire to compete that Aja has shown. Trixie feels like Aja had one of the most beautiful runway looks, but is concerned that since the judges didn’t like it as much that perhaps it’s fair she goes.

8:54 p.m. – For the lip sync, the girls perform to “The Boss” by Diana Ross. I have to admit this song is right up BeBe’s alley and she did really well, but it was a pretty even match up! That being said, BeBe wins!

8:56 p.m. – In tears, BeBe decided to eliminate Aja. A hard choice, to be honest, but between the two of them I think BeBe made the right decision. Luckily, Aja will have a chance to return (I think?). I say “I think” because at the very end of the episode, Ru brings in Alaska and Chad Michaels who only bring out three (not five) queens to compete to return. Which three? We’ll have to wait until next week to see!
