“Dancing with the Stars” fans probably already have celebrity contestants they’re rooting for in this all-athletes season, premiering April 30, but what about the professional dancers who are training and partnering with those celebs? Seven of the 10 pros competing this season have never won a Mirror Ball Trophy before, and when we asked our readers which of them is the most overdue for a victory it wasn’t even close. It’s time for Sharna Burgess to finally win. Scroll down to see our complete poll results at the bottom of this post.
According to almost two-thirds of respondents (64%), Burgess deserves a Mirror Ball championship at long last. She has competed for the last 10 seasons in a row and she has gotten close on multiple occasions, reaching the finals three times but never quite reaching the top of the podium. In season 20 she was partnered with Army soldier and double amputee Noah Galloway, whose inspirational journey ended in third place. Then in season 21 she teamed up with Backstreet Boys singer Nick Carter and finished second. And in season 23 she reached second place again with auto racer James Hinchcliffe.
Will this year be better for Burgess? For this special four-week season she’s partnered with NFL cornerback Josh Norman. That could be good news for her as four football players have won Mirror Ball Trophies in seasons past. But Burgess was also partnered with a footballer in season 22, Antonio Brown, and only made it to fourth place.
Only one other pro dancer in our poll had double-digit support. There were 10% of readers who think Artem Chigvintsev should win the show on his seventh attempt; his celeb partner for “Athletes” is snowboarder Jamie Anderson. And close behind with 9% of the vote was Keo Motsepe, who is also competing in his seventh season of the show, paired this time with softball star Jennie Finch. Neither Chigvintsev nor Motsepe has finished better than sixth in their previous seasons, though Chigvintsev did win “Strictly Come Dancing,” the British equivalent of “DWTS.”
