Monday night on “The Voice,” Kyla Jade and JessLee performed Ariana Grande‘s “One Last Time” for Team Blake Shelton during the first battle round episode of Season 14. Both artists blew the roof off the building, but Blake ultimately chose to save Kyla, thereby eliminating JessLee from the reality TV singing competition. “Kyla’s been a background singer, but it’s taking that step to the front of the stage [that’s tough],” admitted Blake. “As you can see right now, even in this moment that’s weird to her. She stares at the floor. And JessLee, the grit that you had on that song is the thing that Kyla needed to figure out for herself and that’s what you naturally had, just your attack. Anyway, you guys are incredible.” Finally, Blake announced, “I love both of y’all. The winner of this battle is Kyla.”
In his recap of “The Voice,” our live-blogger John Benutty wrote, “Blake vows to pick the winner based off which of the two girls ‘blows the roof off the place.’ In their battle, both JessLee and Kyla seemed a tad nervous in their first verses, but once the big chorus hit they opened their voices and let them soar exactly like we expected them to.”
