Tuesday night on NBC, 16-year-old Jaclyn Lovey sang Elvis Presley‘s “Can’t Help Falling in Love” during the blind auditions of “The Voice” Season 14. The Placerville, California native who’s inspired by classic musicians may have seemed too young for a Presley cover, but she knocked it out of the park. Two coaches — Alicia Keys and Blake Shelton — turned their chairs around for Jaclyn, and she chose Keys. Can Jaclyn make it all the way to the Season 14 live shows? “I think sometimes in this world we feel like we have to over-perform everything,” Keys told Jaclyn while trying to woo her over to her team. “It’s really special that you just showed everybody that you can be simple and pure. I love listening to you sing. Jaclyn, you know, I’m also a huge lover of the classic songs. I really get it. I see exactly what we can do together. We’d be able to find songs that suit your voice just like this one did. We’ll keep it pure, we’ll keep it honest, we’ll keep it genuine and it’ll be all about you.”
In his recap of “The Voice,” our live-blogger John Benutty noted, “Inspired by classic singers like Johnny Cash and Billie Holiday … she took on the Elvis hit ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love’ and had Kelly saying ‘That’s pretty’ immediately. First to hit their button was Blake, followed closely by Alicia, but Kelly and Adam left their backs to the stage. The coaches complimented Jaclyn’s ability to keep it simple and Blake and Kelly emphasized how unique her voice is.”
