Eight is enough in the Best Variety Talk Series race at the Writers Guild Awards. The category features a whopping eight nominees, but the winner Sunday will likely once again be “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” according to our latest predictions.
This would be the second straight and third overall win for John Oliver and his writing team. “Last Week” won its first WGA Award in 2015 when there was a single variety series category for sketch and talk shows. The WGA established two separate variety sketch series and variety talk series categories the following year.
But with eight nominees this year — double last year’s field — nobody is a sure thing. “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee” is on “Last Week”’s heels with 6/1 odds, followed by “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” (20/1 odds). Jimmy Kimmel is coming off arguably his best year yet, turning his emotional story about his newborn’s son’s heart defect into passionate pleas for universal health care. Both shows are also enjoying their first nominations in this category.
“Late Night with Seth Meyers,” “Conan” and “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah” are tied with 66/1 odds, followed by “Real Time with Bill Maher (80/1 odds), which won two years ago, and first-time nominee “The Jim Jeffries Show” (100/1 odds).
