Winners will be decided by online and text voting. The VMAs air at 9 p.m ET on Sept. 6 across the MTV channel of networks from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Rihanna and Drake reaped a leading five bids each. Rihanna appears on two entries in the top category of Video of the Year -- "We Found Love" and "Take Care," her collaboration with Drake. She also contends for Best Female Video, Best Pop Video, Best Choreography and Best Visual Effects. 

Drake also received additional nods for Best Male Video (as did his rival Chris Brown), Best Hip Hop Video, Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography.

Last year's big winner, Katy Perry, earned four VMA nods, including a Video of the Year bid for "Wide Awake." 

Other multiple VMA nominees this year include Beyonce, Justin Bieber, The Black Keys, Gotye and Kanye West.

"Wide Awake" is also nominated for Best Art Direction and Best Visual Effects. This is the second nomination in this category for Katy Perry; she won last year for "Firework."
