Many familiar Broadway veterans - some previous champs and some looking for their first trophy - will face off against quite a few newcomers this year. Acting contenders can appear in either new plays and musicals or revivals of rialto fare. Forty productions are slated for this season which runs from last May to the end of April. Nominations will be announced May 2 with the Tony Awards handed out on June 10. 

In the battle for Best Actress in a Musical, past winners in the hunt include Patti LuPone ("An Evening with Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin"), Audra McDonald ("The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess"), and Bernadette Peters ("Follies"). Other strong contenders include Caissie Levy ("Ghost: The Musical"), Jan Maxwell ("Follies"), Cristin Milioti ("Once), Kelli O'Hara ("Nice Work If You Can Get It"), and Elena Roger ("Evita").

For Best Actor in a Musical, the previous Tony champs include Matthew Broderick ("Nice Work If You Can Get It"), Hugh Jackman ("Hugh Jackman Back on Broadway"), and Mandy Patinkin ("An Evening with Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin"). Also, keep your eyes on Christian Borle ("Peter and the Starcatcher"), Danny Burstein and Ron Raines ("Follies"), Reeve Carney ("Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark"), Raul Esparza ("Leap of Faith"), Steve Kazee ("Once"), and Norm Lewis ("The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess").

Among those in contention for Best Actress in a Play, you'll find past winners Stockard Channing ("Other Desert Cities"), Tyne Daly ("Master Class"), Rosemary Harris ("The Road to Mecca"), Linda Lavin ("The Lyons"), and Cynthia Nixon ("Wit"). Others with strong chances include Angela Bassett ("The Mountaintop"), Tracie Bennett ("End of the Rainbow"), Linda Emond ("Death of a Salesman"), Rachel Griffiths ("Other Desert Cities"), Jennifer Lim ("Chinglish"), Nicole Ari Parker ("A Streetcar Named Desire"), and Lily Rabe ("Seminar").

Previous Tony Award champions back competing this time for Best Actor in a Play are Jim Dale ("The Road to Mecca"), Frank Langella ("Man and Boy"), John Larroquette ("Gore Vidal's The Best Man"), John Lithgow ("The Columnist"), and Frank Wood ("Clybourne Park"). Others in the race include James Corden ("One Man, Two Guvnors"), Dule Hill ("Stick Fly"), Philip Seymour Hoffman ("Death of a Salesman"), Samuel L. Jackson ("The Mountaintop"), Stacy Keach ("Other Desert Cities"), Alan Rickman ("Seminar"), Blair Underwood ("A Streetcar Named Desire"), and Gary Wilmes ("Chinglish").
