DOB: October 23, 1954
Background: Lee was born in Chaochou in Pingtung, a southern agricultural county in Taiwan. He was raised with an emphasis on education, art, and culture. He graduated from the National Arts School in 1975, and it was there he developed an interest in filmmaking. After mandatory military service, he went to the US and studied at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, where he was a classmate of Spike Lee.
Filmography: His films include "The Wedding Banquet" (1993), "Sense and Sensibility" (1995), "The Ice Storm" (1997), "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" (2000), "The Hulk" (2003), "Brokeback Mountain" (2005), and "Lust, Caution" (2007). His latest film is "Life of Pi" (2012), based on the popular fantasy novel of the same name.
