Background: Jolie was born in Los Angeles, the daughter of actor Jon Voight. She attended the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute when she was young, but dropped out and began modeling in Los Angeles, New York, and London. Her troubled youth included an estrangement from her father and mental-health problems, but in her adulthood she has pursued humanitarian causes, including becoming a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations.

Filmography: She began acting in the 1990s, with roles in "Hackers" (1995) and "Playing God" (1997), but it was a pair of television movies that launched her to fame: "George Wallace" (1997) and "Gia" (1998), both of which earned her Emmy nominations and Golden Globe Awards. She won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for "Girl, Interrupted" (1999), after which she established herself as an action star, appearing in "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" (2001), "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" (2005), "Wanted" (2008), and "Salt" (2010) in addition to the dramas "The Good Shepherd" (2006), "A Mighty Heart" (2007), and Clint Eastwood's "Changeling" (2008). This year she makes her feature directing debut with "In the Land of Blood and Honey."
