Background: Bening was born in Topeka, Kansas, the youngest of four siblings. She began acting in junior high school and studied drama at Patrick Henry High School. She spent a year as a cook on a charter boat, and later earned a degree in theater arts from San Francisco State University. She joined the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco before moving to New York.
