DOB: September 17, 1962
Background: Luhrmann was born in Sydney, Australia, but raised in Herons creek, a small rural settlement in New South Wales, where his father ran a movie theater, which would influence his filmmaking career. He graduated from the National Institute of Dramatic Art in 1985. He is married to Catherine Martin, the production designer on all of his films.
Filmography: Luhrmann has only directed five films. His first feature was "Strictly Ballroom" (1992), which he followed with the modern Shakespeare adaptation "Romeo + Juliet" (1996). His 2001 musical "Moulin Rouge!" earned an Oscar nomination for Best Picture, but his 2008 sweeping drama "Australia" was met with mixed reviews. His latest film is "The Great Gatsby," adapted from F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel.
