Background: Washington was born in Mount Vernon, New York. After the breakup of his parents' marriage, he was sent to military school in New Windsor, NY. He earned a bahcelor's degree in Drama and Journalism from Fordham University, where he played basketball. He attended the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco for one year before returning to New York to pursue his acting career.

Filmography: His breakthrough role came in the 1980s medical drama series "St. Elsewhere," where he starred for six years. During that time, he appeared in "Cry Freedom" (1987), and after the series ended he won his first Oscar for "Glory" (1989). His subsequent film roles include "Mississippi Masala" (1991), "Malcolm X" (1992), "Philadelphia" (1993), "Crimson Tide" (1995), "Devil in a Blue Dress" (1995), "Courage Under Fire" (1996), "The Preacher's Wife" (1996), "The Hurricane" (1999), "Training Day" (2001), "Man on Fire" (2004), "The Manchurian Candidate" (2004), "Inside Man" (2006), and "American Gangster" (2007). He also ventured into directing with the films "Antwone Fisher" (2002) and "The Great Debaters" (2007).
