Background: McGovern was born in Illinois to two educators. Her family moved to Los Angeles, where she started acting in plays while attending school. An agent saw one of her performances and encouraged her to study at the American Conservatory Theater, followed by the famed Juilliard School in New York City.

Filmography: While still in school at Juilliard, she was offered a part as Timothy Hutton's girlfriend in "Ordinary People," directed by Robert Redford. Her next film, "Ragtime," was directed by Milos Forman and earned her an Oscar nomination. Other films through her career have included "Once Upon a Time in America," "The Bedroom Window," "She's Having a Baby," "The Wings of the Dove," "A Room with a View," and "Clash of the Titans." Her television career has included roles on "Faerie Tale Theatre," "Ashenden," "Tales from the Crypt," "The Scarlet Pimpernel," and "Downton Abbey," for which she received her first Emmy Award nomination in 2011.
