Background: Rush was born in Queensland, Australia, but raised in Brisbane after his parents' divorce when he was five. He studied arts at the University of Queensland, where he was scouted by the Queensland Theatre Company, subsequently acting in seventeen productions with the group starting in 1971.
Filmography: He began his film career in the early 1980s, but did not act on screen in earnest until the 1990s. His breakthrough film was "Shine" in 1996, in which he played pianist David Helfgott, earning him an Academy Award for Best Actor, making him the first Australian-born actor to accomplish the feat. Afterwards he appeared in a pair of Elizabethan Oscar-winners: "Elizabeth" with Cate Blanchett and "Shakespeare in Love," which won Best Picture in 1999. Later notable films include "Quills," "Frida," "The Life and Death of Peter Sellers," and "Munich." He played the pirate Barbossa in Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean" films and co-starred in the sequel "Elizabeth: The Golden Age." This year he will be seen in the film "The Eye of the Storm" with Charlotte Rampling and Judy Davis.
