DOB: March 19, 1947
Background: The versatile Close has achieved success on stage, in film and on television. Brought up in a life of privilege, Close broke away from her family, which had become involved with a fundamentalist group, and attended William and Mary where she discovered a love of acting. She pursued a stage career, landing a Tony nomination for the musical "Barnum" in 1980 before heading to Hollywood.
Filmography: Close chose "The World According to Garp" for her first film and reaped an Oscar bid for that as well as her next two movies -- "The Big Chill" and "The Natural." She returned to Broadway in 1984 winning a Tony Award as Best Play Actress for "The Real Thing." That same year, she earned her first Emmy nomination for the highly rated telefilm "Something About Amelia."
Her signature film performance, as the spurned mistress in 1987's "Fatal Attraction," earned her first Best Actress Oscar nomination as did "Dangerous Liaisons" the following year. Close won her second Tony Award in 1994 for the musical version of "Sunset Boulevard," breaking hearts as the mad movie star Norma Desmond. She proved herself as adept at comedy as drama, creating the live-action version of Cruella DeVille in "101 Dalmations" in 1996. Througout the 1990s, she appeared in acclaimed TV movies as well, winning an Emmy for "Serving in Silence: The Margarethe Cammermeyer Story" about gays in the military.
After a successful stint on the FX crime drama "The Shield" as a tough-as-nails police chief, Close headlined the series "Damages" for the network. Her portrayal of the legal eagle Patty Hewes won her two Emmys as Best Drama Actress.
