Background: Gandolfini is a New Jersey-born actor. He played basketball and performed in school plays in high school. Then he worked as a bouncer while earning a bachelor's degree in communication from Rutgers University. He developed an interested in acting by joining his friend Roger Bart at a Meisner technique acting class.
Filmography: His early on-screen performances included a number of tough-guy roles in films like "True Romance," "Terminal Velocity," and "The Juror." He also appeared in "Crimson Tide," "She's So Lovely," and "A Civil Action" before playing his best-known role: Tony Sopranos on the critically hailed HBO drama "The Sopranos," a role he played from 1999 to 2007. Since achieving stardom he appeared in the Coen Brothers' film "The Man Who Wasn't There" and the drama "All the King's Men." In recent years he played a general in the political satire "In the Loop" and voiced a character in "Where the Wild Things Are." This year he appeared in the HBO telefilm "Cinema Verite" and will next be seen in the film "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close."
