Background: Law was born in South London and began acting in 1987 with the National Youth Music Theater.

Filmography: In the late 1980s and early 1990s he made several TV appearances, but his breakthrough came in 1997 with his appearances in the films "Wilde," about the famed author Oscar Wilde, and "Gattaca," a science-fiction drama co-starring Ethan Hawke. Two years later he appeared in "The Talented Mr. Ripley," earning his first Oscar nod at the age of twenty-seven. He appeared in Steven Spielberg's "A.I." and Sam Mendes's "Road to Perdition" before earning his second nomination for "Cold Mountain," which reunited him with "Talented" director Anthony Minghella. He appeared in the Mike Nichols's drama "Closer," adapted from a stage play. He also played the title role in the remake of "Alfie." His other noteworthy films include "The Holiday," "The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus," and "Sherlock Holmes," in which he plays Dr. Watson opposite Robert Downey Jr. This year he will be seen in "Hugo," as well as Steven Soderbergh's "Contagion."
