Background: Bigelow was born in San Carlos, California. She had an early interest in painting and received her bachelor's degree in Fine Arts in 1972. She received an Independent Study scholarship from the Whitney Museum. Bigelow earned a master's degree in theory and criticism at Columbia University. She taught at the California Institute of the Arts.
Filmography: She has directed "The Loveless" (1982), "Near Dark" (1987), "Blue Steel" (1989), "Point Break" (1991), "Strange Days" (1995), "The Weight of Water" (2000), "K-19: The Widowmaker" (2002), and "The Hurt Locker" (2008), for which she became the first woman awarded Best Director at the Oscars. Her latest film chronicles the hunt for terrorist leader Osama Bin Laden.
