Background: Spacey is a New Jersey native of English and Welsh descent. He graduated as valedictorian of Chatsworth High School, where he appeared in a school production of "The Sound of Music" opposite Mare Winningham. He tried his hand at stand-up comedy before attending Juilliard from 1979 to 1981.
Filmography: He performed in several stage productions during the 1980s and won a Tony Award in 1991 for "Lost in Yonkers." His early TV roles include "Wiseguy" (1988) and episodes of "Crime Story" and "L.A. Law." In 1992 he starred in the film "Glengarry Glen Ross," adapted from David Mamet's play. His breakthrough role was in 1995's "The Usual Suspects," which won him the first of two Oscars. He appeared in several acclaimed films, including "Seven" and "L.A. Confidential," before winning his second Oscar for 1999's "American Beauty." Since then, he has appeared in "The Shipping News" (2001), "Beyond the Sea" (2004), "Superman Returns" (2006), "The Men Who Stare At Goats" (2009), and most recently "Casino Jack" (2010).
