Background: Nolte was born and raised in Nebraska, where he was a kicker on the Westside High School football team. He played football, basketball, and baseball at Eastern Arizona College, but low grades ended his academic career. He wanted to enlist in the military to fight in the Vietnam War, but a criminal record prevented this. After performing in stage productions in Los Angeles, he traveled around the country performing in regional theaters.
Filmography: His on-screen acting career started in 1969, and included mostly appearances in TV series and movies, including the miniseries "Rich Man, Poor Man" in 1976. After that career breakthrough, he appeared in "48 Hours" (1982), "Down and Out in Beverly Hills" (1986), and "Cape Fear" (1991). He earned an Oscar nomination for "The Prince of Tides" (1991), directed by Barbara Streisand. He followed that performances with notable films including "I Love Trouble" with Julia Roberts, "Mulholland Falls," "Afterglow" with Julie Christie, and "U Turn." He received another Oscar nomination for "Affliction" (1997) before appearing in the Terrence Malick's Oscar nominated "The Thin Red Line" (1998). In the last ten years, Nolte has appeared in Ang Lee's "The Hulk," "Clean," "Hotel Rwanda," "The Spiderwick Chronicles," and "Tropic Thunder." This year he appeared in the remake of "Arthur" and will be seen in the mixed martial arts film "Warrior."
