Background: Stone was born in New york City. He was raised in the Episcopal Church but has since converted to Buddhism. He attended Yale, but left after one year. He taught English in South Vietnam for six months, after which he worked on a US Merchant Marine ship. He enlisted in the army in 1967 and requested combat duty in Vietnam, where he earned a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart before discharing in 1968 after 15 months. Stone graduated from film school at NYU in 1971.
