Background: Giamatti was born in New Haven, Connecticut to Angelo Bartlett Giamatti, who became the president of Yale University as well as the commissioner of Major League Baseball. At Yale University, where he was inducted to the Skull and Bones society, he was active in the undergraduate theater scene and performed opposite fellow students Ron Livingston and Edward Norton. He earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Yale School of Drama.
Filmography: His first high-profile role was in the Howard Stern biopic "Private Parts," after which he played supporting roles in "The Truman Show," "Saving Private Ryan," and "The Negotiator." He achieved great acclaim in 2003's "American Splendor," playing cancer-stricken comic book artist Harvey Pekar. He was met with even greater critical success in the Alexander Payne comedy "Sideways." He received an Oscar nod for playing boxing trainer to Russell Crowe's underdog fighter in "Cinderella Man." More recent films include "The Illusionist," "The Last Station," and "Barney's Version." He played the title role in the HBO miniseries "John Adams," earning an Emmy. This year he starred in Thomas McCarthy's film "Win Win," and the HBO telefilm "Too Big to Fail" as Ben Bernanke.
