Background: Gere was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a descendant of Mayflower Pilgrims. He excelled at music and gymnastics, and attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst on a gymnastics scholarship, but left after two years.

Filmography: His many noteworthy films include "Looking for Mr. Goodbar" (1977), "Days of Heaven" (1978), "American Gigolo" (1980), "An Officer and a Gentleman" (1982), "Pretty Woman" (1990), "Sommersby" (1993), "Primal Fear" (1996), "Runaway Bride" (1999), "Dr. T and the Women" (2000), "Unfaithful" (2002), "Chicago" (2002), "The Hoax" (2006), "I'm Not There" (2007), and "Amelia" (2009). His latest film is the financial thriller "Arbitrage" (2012).
