Background: Forster was born in Rochester, New York. His father trained elephants for Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. He studied history at the University of Rochester, where he appeared in student productions like "Bye Bye Birdie." Instead of studying law, he chose to pursue drama instead.

Filmography: He made his film debut in 1967's "Reflections in a Golden Eye," and appeareed two years later in the critically acclaimed "Medium Cool." In the 1970s he played the starring roles on the series "Banyon" (1971-1973) and "Nakia" (1974). He appeared in a string of B-movies in the 1980s, including "Alligator," "Vigilante," and "The Delta Force," but in 1997 his career was revived by Quentin Tarantino, who cast him in "Jackie Brown," earning him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Since then, he has appeared in remakes of "Psycho" and "Rear Window" (both 1998), "Mulholland Drive" (2001), "Confidence" (2003), and recurred on the TV series "Karen Sisco" (2003-2004), "Huff" (2004-2005), and "Heroes" (2008). This year he appears in "The Descendants" with George Clooney.
