Background: Crowe was born in Wellington, New Zealand, but his family moved to Australia when he was four. His parents were both movie set caterers. His family returned to New Zealand when he was fourteen, and he dropped out of his grammar school at age sixteen to pursue an acting career.

Filmography: After a number of television roles, including "Neighbours" in 1987, he appeared in the films "Proof" (1991), "Romper Stomper" (1992), and "The Sum of Us" (1994) before making the American films "The Quick and the Dead" (1995) and "Virtuosity" (1995). His breakthrough role was in the Oscar-winning "L.A. Confidential" (1997), after which he received consecutive Oscar nominations for "The Insider" (1999), "Gladiator" (2000), and "A Beautiful Mind" (2001); he won for "Gladiator." He also appeared in "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World" (2003), "Cinderella Man" (2005), "American Gangster"' (2007), "State of Play" (2009), and "Robin Hood" (2010). In 2012, he plays Inspector Javert in Tom Hooper's adaptation of the musical "Les Miserables."
