Background: Hanks is an American actor, producer, and director who was born in Concord, California. He acted in several school plays before graduating and then studying theater at Chabot College and California State University. He became an intern and then a full-time staff member for the Great Lakes Theater Festival in Cleveland, Ohio.

Filmography: After moving to New York City in 1979, his first film role was in "He Knows You're Alone." The following year he was cast in the ABC comedy series "Bosom Buddies" which ran for two seasons. Due to a guest role on "Happy Days," he met Ron Howard who would cast Hanks in the film "Splash" in 1984. An extensive film career followed with "Bachelor Party," "Nothing in Common," "The Money Pit," "Dragnet," "Big," "Punchline," "The Burbs," "Joe versus the Volcano," "The Bonfire of the Vanities," "Turner and Hooch," "A League of Their Own," "Sleepless in Seattle," "Philadelphia," "Forrest Gump," "Apollo 13," "Toy Story," "That Thing You Do!," "Saving Private Ryan," "You've Got Mail," "The Green Mile," "Cast Away," "Road to Perdition," "The Ladykillers," "The Terminal," "The Polar Express," "The Da Vinci Code," "Charlie Wilson's War," "Larry Crowne," and "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close." He has also produced television projects "From the Earth to the Moon," "Band of Brothers," "John Adams," and "The Pacific." He received the life achievement award from the American Film Institute in 2002. He has been on the Board of Governors for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences since 2005.
