Background: Hurt is an Oscar-winning actor who was born and raised in Washington, D.C., where his mother worked for Time, Inc., and his father worked for the U.S. State Department. He had the lead in several high school plays, attended Tufts University for a short while studying theology, and finished his education at the famed Juilliard Drama School in New York.

Filmography: Hurt's first major film role was in the science fiction hit "Altered States." He immediately followed with box office successes including "Body Heat," "The Big Chill," "Gorky Park," "The Accidental Tourist," "The Doctor," "Dark City," "Sunshine," "A.I.: Artificial Intelligence," "The Village," "Into the Wild," and "Robin Hood." He won an Academy Award on his first nomination in 1986 for "Kiss of the Spider Woman," and has followed with other Oscar nods for "Children of a Lesser God" (1987), "Broadcast News" (1988), and "A History of Violence" (2006). He has also received Emmy nominations for the TV series "Damages" (2009) and the TV movie "Too Big to Fail" (2011).
