Oscars: Best Original Screenplay - Overview

In Best Original Screenplay, Woody Allen emerges as a serious contender for the critically beloved "Midnight in Paris." Allen has been nodded in this category a record 14 times, winning for "Annie Hall" (1977) and "Hannah and Her Sisters" (1986).

Predict the Best Original Screenplay nominees here!

Writer/director Michel Hazanavicius could become a first-time nominee in both categories for "The Artist." The mostly silent black-and-white film about a silent film actor who refuses to work in talkies is a threat to win.

The Iranian "A Separation" is a frontrunner for Best Foreign Language Film. Asghar Farhadi penned the piece about a couple whose already tumultuous divorce proceedings are further complicated when rival court cases involving an elderly parent arise. He could be a nominee as well.

Mike Mills was inspired by his own experience when he wrote "Beginners," about a young man struggling with news his elderly father is gay and gravely ill. This would be his first Oscar nomination.

Previous Best Original Screenplay winners Dustin Lance Black ("Milk," 2008) and Diablo Cody ("Juno," 2007) are competitors for "J. Edgar" and "Young Adult" respectively. Terrence Malick's "The Tree of Life", Jeff Nichols's "Take Shelter", and Sean Durkin's "Martha Marcy May Marlene" are also very much in the mix.

Slighter possibilities are "Bridesmaids," "A Better Life," "Anonymous," "Contagion," "Crazy Stupid Love," "Like Crazy," "Melancholia," "Rampart," "Shame," "The Iron Lady," "Warrior," "Win Win," "50 50," and "Rango."
