The film follows the relationship between fledgling psychiatrist Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender) and his mentor Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen) and the young woman -- Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley) -- who comes between them.

Star Glenn Close and Booker prize-winning novelist John Banville adapted George Moore's short story about a woman (Close) forced to disguise herself as a man to survive in 19th century Dublin. 

Oscar-winning director Roman Polanksi and Yazmin Reza adapted her 2009 Tony-winning play "God of Carnage" about two sets of parents who clash after their children have a fight at school. Two-time Oscar winner Jodie Foster and nominee John C. Reilly play the coarser pair while Oscar champs Kate Winslet and Christoph Waltz are the seemingly more refined set.

Two-time Oscar nominee John Logan ("Gladiator," 2000; "The Aviator," 2004) adapted William Shakekespeare's tragedy of a banished leader who fights back in ancient Rome.  

Oscar nominee Hossein Amini ("The Wings of the Dove") adapted the 2005 crime novel by James Sallis. 

Eric Roth won this race in 1994 for "Forrest Gump" and has contended three more times since -- "the Insider," 1999;  "Munich," 2005; and "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," 2008. For this film, he adapted the bestselling novel of the same name by Jonathan Safran Foer about a young boy (Thomas Horn) dealing with the death of his father (Tom Hanks) in the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center. 

Steven Kloves contended in this category in 2000 for his work on "Wonder Boys." He adapted six of the seven "Harry Potter" books including the final installment of the series which was split into two parts as a film . 

Two-time Oscar nominee John Logan ("Gladiator," 2000; "The Aviator," 2004) adapted Brian Selznick's children's book "The Invention of Hugo Cabret" for this film about an orphan boy (Asa Butterfield) who lives in a train station in 1930s Paris.

Adrian Hodges adapted Colin Clark's memoir about the time he spent with Marilyn Monroe (Michelle WIlliams) while she was filming "The Prince and the Showgirl" with Laurence Olivier (Kenneth Branagh). 

Steven Moffat, Eric Wright and Joe Cornish adapted several of Herge's stories about the boy detective (Jamie Bell) and his faithful companion Snowy as they set out on a series of adventures. 

Director Alexander Payne, who won this race in 2004 with Jim Taylor for "Sideways," worked with Nat Faxon and Jim Rush to adapt Kaui Hart Hemmings' novel about a man (George Clooney) forced to deal with the adultery of his dying wife while making a lifechanging business decision.

Steve Zaillian, who won this race in 1993 for "Schindler's List," adapted Stieg Larsson's bestseller about a young computer hacker (Rooney Mara) who helps a journalist (Daniel Craig) in his search for a missing woman. 

Director Tate Taylor adapted Kathryn Stockett's bestselling novel about the complicated relationships between white woman and their African-American maids in early 1960s Mississippi. 

Director George Clooney and Grant Heslov -- who contended in 2005 for their original screenplay for "Good Night, and Good Luck" -- worked with Beau Willimon to adapt his play "Farragut North" about a political operative (Ryan Gosling) caught up in a sex scandal. 

Director Pedro Almodovar, who win Original Screenplay in 2002 for "Talk to Her," adapted Thierry Jonquet's novel "Tarantula" to tell this dark tale of a surgeon (Antonio Banderas) seeking to avenge the death of his daughter.  

Peter Straughn and Bridget O'Connor adapted John le Carre's 1974 spy novel about a MI-6 operative (Gary Oldman) on the hunt for a Soviet mole. 

Original screenplay nominees Richard Curtis ("Four Weddings and a Funeral," 1994) and Lee Hall ("Billy Elliot," 2000) adapted Michael Morpurgo's best-selling children's book about a young man (Jeremy Irvine) forced to fight in World War I to find and rescue his beloved horse. 

Original Screenplay winner Cameron Crowe ("Almost Famous," 2000) and Aline Brosh McKenna adapted Benjamin Mee's memoir about his family's efforts to save a failing zoo. 

Director Lynne Ramsay adapted Lionel Shriver's novel of the same name about a mother (Tilda Swinton) forced to finally confront the bloody actions of her violent son (Ezra Miller).
