Oscars: Best Adapted Screenplay - Overview

"Moneyball" claimed the first major screenplay prize when it won the New York Film Critics Circle Award. Writer Aaron Sorkin won the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar just last year for his "The Social Network" script and he and "Moneyball" co-writer Steve Zaillian -- who won an Oscar for "Schindler's List" (1993) -- could pick up their second statuettes in the same field.

The pair face a challenge from other former Oscar winners, including Zaillian himself for his "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" adaptation. Eric Roth won his award for "Forrest Gump" (1994) and now enters the derby with 9/11 drama "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close." Alexander Payne, a winning writer of "Sideways" (2004), contends for "The Descendants" with Nat Faxon and Jim RushChristopher Hampton won this prize in 1988 for "Dangerous Liaisons" and now is in the mix for historical drama "A Dangerous Method."

Screenwriters who previously competed in the Best Original Screenplay race who this year have adaptations include George Clooney and Grant Heslov. They were cited for "Good Night, and Good Luck" in 2005. Now they have political drama "The Ides of March," adapted with Beau Willimon from his play "Farrgut North."

Lee Hall and Richard Curtis translated children's novel "War Horse" to the screen. Hall had an Oscar bid for "Billy Elliot" (2000) while Richard Curtis was up for "Four Weddings and a Funeral" (1994).

Another strong possibility is "The Help," Tate Taylor's adaptation of a bestselling novel about African-American maids in 1960s Mississippi. Other shots are "Albert Nobbs," "Carnage," "Coriolanus," "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2," "Hugo," "Jane Eyre," "My Week with Marilyn," "The Adventures of Tintin," "The Skin I Live In," "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy," "We Bought a Zoo," and "We Need to Talk About Kevin."
