Last year, Mumford & Sons were snubbed by the Grammys for Best Rock Duo/Group Performance for "Little Lion Man." Since then, their debut album "Sigh No More" has topped 2 million copies sold and one of its tracks -- "The Cave" -- competes for both Record and Song of the Year as well as in this new genre race which combines solo and duo/group rock performances.
One of their main rivals -- Foo Fighters -- lost the duo/group race three times contending for "Learn to Fly" (2000), "Times Like These" (2003) and "Best of You" (2005). They were edged out twice by U2 and once by Bruce Springsteen and Warren Zevon. With "Wasting Light" contending for Album of the Year, they may prevail here for "Walk."
Coldplay contend with "Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall." Of their six duo/group bids, only 2002's "In My Place" won as iconic tracks like "Yellow" (2001) and "Speed of Sound" (2005) were passed over. The band may well be shedding teardrops or waterfalls or whatever it is they do when they're sad as they are longshots to win this year.
Radiohead's somber "Lotus Flower" seems out of place among the more rocking nominees. They lost the duo/group race twice before -- "There There" (2003) and "House of Cards" (2008) -- to tunes with more panache. The band has better chances to win Best Alternative Music Album for "The King of Limbs."
Folk-rock group The Decemberists find themselves competing in this genre for the first time. Their "Down by the Water" also picked up a bid as Best Rock Song. Unfortunately for them, this category is stacked full of veterans.
